Landscaping and Beautification Committees
NCC is responsible for maintaining 22 landscaping boxes along Rt. 161 – these boxes are located near the
major intersections. They start at Sandalwood & Rt. 161 and end at Ponderosa & Rt. 161. Some intersections
have enough room between the service road and Rt. 161 for one box in each of the four corners. Other
intersections have only enough room for only two corners.
Through corporate support from Giant Eagle (Rt. 161/I-71) and Home Depot (Cleveland Avenue/I-270)
we have received donations to help volunteers purchase perennial flowers to beautify the landscaping
boxes. In the middle of the season there is a panel of judges that review each landscape box and award
prizes for the three best. The award winners are recognized at a dinner at Giant Eagle and receive valuable
gift cards toward grocery purchases.

Also, NCC wants to recognize the efforts by business and organizations in the Northland area to beautify
their property. Each summer a panel of judges receive nominations from the member associations. The judges
visit the nominee locations. Awards are given in three categories. These categories are: Small Commercial,
Large Commercial, Non-Profit Organization. An announcement is made at the next regularly scheduled NCC
meeting and is noted in the local newspaper. Also, at the annual awards and installation of officers banquet
that is held in February of each year the award winners receive a plaque.

NCC is concerned with public safety in the Northland area. We help civic associations organize Block Watch
groups and maintain contact with the Columbus Police Department. We have been instrumental with the
development of additional police stations and mid-watch stations in the Northland area and stopped the
relocation of the Karl and Morse Roads unit to the Linden area.

There are several social events that make NCC a fun place to get involved!
Annual Awards Program and Installation of Officers Banquet
In February of each year we have a banquet at Monaco’s Palace on Cleveland Avenue just north of
Morse Road to honor outstanding volunteers in each member association. The president of each
civic association is allowed to make a brief speech and present awards to three of its members.
The honorees receive certificates of appreciation from Columbus City Council, Ohio House of
Representatives, and Ohio Senate. The banquet gives member associations an opportunity to show
their volunteers how much they are appreciated. We also have an installation ceremony for the
incoming NCC officers at this event.
Chairperson: Roseann Hicks
Every August we hold a picnic meeting, usually at the Blendon Woods Metro Park at the Sycamore
Shelter on the second Tuesday in August. NCC provides the meat (i.e. hamburgers, hot dogs, brats)
and we ask folks to bring a covered dish. There is a light business meeting but the primary reason
for the get together is for folks to talk informally about their associations and their various problems.
Typically officers and interested members of the civic associations come to the picnic.
Chairperson: Roseann Hicks
In December of each year we celebrate the end of the year and get together to enjoy each other’s
company at a local restaurant. We usually have a light business meeting.

NCC is interested in maintaining a liaison with the four school districts that serve the Northland area.
These four districts are: Columbus, Worthington, Westerville and New Albany. We are looking for ways
to get the citizens involved with mentoring school children and helping the Adopt-A-School program.

The NCC maintains a Traffic Wish List that is coordinated by the chairman of the Traffic Committee
with the City of Columbus (Traffic Department). This list contains requests, from the member associations,
ranging from items such as road paving, street widening/improvements to lights/signage changes. This list
is posted and updated periodically, on this NCC website. New requests are compiled in the spring of each
year and are forwarded to the City for their review. As each request is completed, denied or cancelled
the item is removed from the list. The Traffic Wish List is located under its own icon, under the “About NCC”
link.

The NCC Neighborhood Pride Committee is newly designated as of 2006. This committee was created to inform and
educate NCC member associations about the benefits of participation in the City's Neighborhood Pride program,
as well as other City programs that offer value to Northland communities. It will work with the Department of Development
and the Neighborhood Pride program staff to keep Northland communities on the City's "radar" for neighborhood
improvement events and projects in coming years. NOTE: Applications must be filed to the City of Columbus by November 30th
of each year to be considered for Neighborhood Pride the next year. Click HERE for a copy of the Neighborhood Pride City application.
